It was that one afternoon when me and my sister decided to go to Starbucks.
She wanted me to teach her how to do her resume online. And so we bought coffee and sat down. While I was showing her how to do Linkedin, Google+, and Facebook, she suddenly freaked out when I was asking her personal questions about herself. I was totally appalled at her behavior.
She just said, “It’s okay. I can do this at home. I’ll do it later.”
“Why wait?” I asked, “that’s the reason why we came up here right? To do your resume and establish your social media. Now, you’re telling me no?” I just couldn’t understand her.
She said, “J**** helped me to set up my Yahoo email and so I’ve never done this before.” Um, excuse me? Isn’t that’s the reason why I’m here? To teach her.
And now she’s back off and said to me, “It’s a second nature to you!”
It might be a second nature to me since I am a Graphic Designer and I have had a computer since day one but it doesn’t mean that I know everything.
There are so many things I don’t know about until this day I feel fearful but this doesn’t stop me from learning. Many times I feel insufficient and feel like I’m always competing with the best Designers in town. But does it stop me from learning?
Of course not!
I found out that my sister has cyberphobia.
Do you know what a cyberphobia is?
It is an intense fear of the computer technology. Most of the people who are fearful of their computer are old people who didn’t grow up having a computer at home. But my sister is not old.
She has two computers but she’s not putting it to use. She’s afraid of Facebook, Google+, Linkedin, and the Social Media. I told her that nowadays you can work in a distance. Like you can have your employer live in New York City while you live here in California. We can communicate via Skype or Google Hangout.
She said, “Um, that’s scary!” while she keeps drinking her coffee.
Well, it is scary if you think it is scary. But what is there to be afraid of? It is only a computer. It is only a technology. The computer would not bite you if you made a mistake, would it?
The computer doesn’t have intelligence. It is us who have the intelligence.
The computer is only a tool to use in this modern day age of Information Technology. But…If there’s a will there’s a way. You have got to lose that fear. You are the only person stopping you from going further in life.
Why quit before you even start?
If you can use your smartphone with ease to talk to others in long distance, Skype is the same way. Except you see each other face-to-face. Wouldn’t it be more convenient to do it that way?
You will never leave your home to go to a building. All you need to do is get ready. Fix up your face. Wear a decent clothing and choose the area you want to be seen.
So long as you have the Internet, seeing each other face-to-face is not a problem at all. It is like having an interview face-to-face except you are in front of the camera.
So why be afraid of the camera?
I can understand that maybe you are afraid of how you would look in front of the camera. But trust me your interviewer or client leads doesn’t care of how you look.
What they care the most is how your service become part of the solution to their problem.
It is the information you give them that matter the most. This is not a beauty contest. The more you practice being in front of the camera the better you are, the more you lose your fear!
What is there to fear? Fear of your own computer!?
We accept the television. We accept the radio. We accept the smartphone. Why can’t we accept the new technology of communication via computer? Life becomes easier.
The computer is a dumb machine. It is the people who made it intelligent.
View your computer only as a tool to get you to the next level. There is nothing to fear. In analogy, this is like driving your car. For instance, you can walk to San Francisco and this might take you a couple days. But you can drive your car and this might take you only a couple of hours!
Your computer is the same way. Sending your resume the old fashion way may take 3 days before it gets there. But it might take only 3 minutes to send it via online. This is a lot faster. Right?
I’m really trying to understand my sister.
I have contemplated so hard about this. It might be a small thing for me but it is like a mountain to climb for her. Okay, I understand this.
Not everyone can easily adapt to the new technology specially if that’s not the thing they do at work. But let’s face it, we are getting more and more computerized each day.
Look at this, 70% of the newspaper shrink down. 50% of the yellow pages went down its size. Borders in Fresno went out of business because of bankruptcy.
Amazon Kindle books increased 90% of sales in comparison to the traditional paper books. Everyone can now read a book in their Kindle or computer with its Kindle application. The Kindle books are a lot cheaper than the regular pocket books. eBooks cost as much as a cup of coffee.
Self-publishing your books is a lot easier now compare to 20 years ago. Publishing a book on paper in the past can take as long as six months. There are so many things you have to go through. Kindle books only take 24-hours to get your book approved and you can make money right away.
I understand that some people are still stuck in the antiquated world.
But if you want this bad enough, you can learn. Exercise those brain cells. You learn how to operate your smartphone. I believe you can also learn how to operate your own computer!
Before you can accept something, it has something you understand and familiar with. Right? So accept your fear and acknowledge it. But you must feel comfortable out of being uncomfortable. Your mind has a lot of power. What you think of yourself today will determine of “who you are” tomorrow.
Accept the fact that the world change its technology. From stone age to modern age. If you don’t lose your fear, it can immobilize you. It can block your mental capacity. It has nothing to do with the present. But rather it anticipates the future and/or reflects back in the past that has nothing to do with reality.
Be positive…positive…positive… Even if you don’t feel like it, do not rely on your feelings because you can do more than what you think. Do not compare yourself to others.
No two people are alike. Even twins are not alike. Each have their own identity.
Even if you follow someone else’s footsteps, your success will determine on your own experience. Your experience will be completely unique and a lot different. Not to be repeated. You don’t want to be molded on the same cookie cutter. Your success will be one-of-a-kind.
Let go of the fear. Take baby steps. If you can set up your email on your own without any help, this is one thing to build your confidence in doing things on your own.
Computers are authentic. It is real. It is taking over our technology. In every business, everyone uses the computer. What business there is that doesn’t use a computer?
Perhaps carpentry, custodian, pottery?
Everytime you turn around everything is computerize. You go to the supermarket, everything is computerize. No one calculates this on their own anymore. The computer calculates this for the cashier and gives you change automatically.
But then I realize your fear is also authentic.
I suggest do not entertain this negativity. Instead of saying “I can’t do it,” say “I can do it.” Your subconscious mind cannot tell between real or unreal. Your conscious mind dictates your subconscious. If you say, “I can’t do it” therefore your subconscious will say, “Alright…I can’t do it.”
King Solomon is very clever when he says,
“For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7)
If you believe you can do it, therefore your subconscious will obey what your conscious mind is saying. Remember that those who wins never stop trying. And those who stop trying never wins!
Faith: Trust Within Self
Just like any other technology, you have got to trust yourself. Don’t be afraid of the trial and error. Failure is not the opposite of Success. But Failure is part of the process to get your destiny over Success.
Practice makes you perfect.
My logic is saying if you can read you can create your account. If you can read you can follow instructions. Right? If you don’t try anything new, you are robbing yourself from getting ahead.
Over to you…
So far I am still trying to finish my book on “How to Create a Blog” and my sister is my inspiration on doing this. She is the reason. So…Do you know anybody who has fear of their computer? How did you help this person? Please share with me your experience on the comment I have provided below.
