25-years ago all I need was an X-acto knife & technical pens and I’m in business! Graphic Designers then have to master how to use the X-acto knife for “cutting” the rubylith; the masking film used to separate CMYK colors for printing.
“I have been a stripper without taking my clothes off.”
You have to be proficient in using technical pens specially for architectural companies who used a lot of drawing illustrations on their blueprints. You have to be knowledgeable enough how to use the rubber cement so you’re not bulking up your layout with improper used of “paste up.”
After X-acto knife, rubber cement, and technical pens…I actually learned how to draw using the digital pen on a tablet. I thought that was the most awesome thing on planet earth. I remember it was Genigraphics then. Until the Macintosh came along and it changed our industry for good.
This is the first artwork I’ve done in Genigraphics. It was a multimedia company which specializes on slides and animation. This is not the best artwork. But our company was one of the 8 companies who used Genigraphics. It was a big deal then. Then Macintosh came in the picture and it’s history! The biggest history in commercial industry for all Graphic Designers.
Because of the new computer technology, they predicted to eliminate Graphic Designers. But lets take a closer look at this. Just because you have a typewriter it doesn’t mean you automatically become a Writer. And so just because you have a computer it doesn’t mean you automatically become a Graphic Designer. It takes knowledge to create a magazine executed in InDesign. You have to be proficient in certain applications such as the Adobe CS6 or QuarkXPress. You have to know how CMYK work when you print something. And what you see is not what you get.
Because of the new format we called WordPress, you can now create a website without the knowledge of HTML. Even your secretary can now become a graphic designer. Suddenly, everyone wants to be a graphic designer. You don’t need to go to school for this. I mean, you can be a graphic designer without stepping your foot in school. Just learn the know-how-to-do-it in WordPress and you can become a Design Consultant just on this format alone.
But for me it is different. I came a long way. From being an ancient user of traditional paint brush to the modern use of paint brush in Photoshop, I mean I have evolved from a cocoon to a butterfly. I don’t mean in a beauty sense but in a technical approach. Now, in order to be a Graphic Designer you have to know the computer and the applications to execute the artwork. If you don’t know anything about the computer you have been left behind, you might as well kiss the job goodbye because the use of technical pens have been eliminated.
I’d say this must have been the biggest change in the commercial industry. I was one of these artist who used to develop prints or slides from a film. I remember how awful it was to smell chemicals in the dark room. And since they develop the digital photography in 2000, I have stopped developing my photos and just stored them all in my hard drive. Anyway…
Additional knowledge of Internet marketing and book keeping doesn’t hurt either because most of Graphic Designers of today work as Freelancers. Graphic Designers of today wears a lot of hats. Besides being a Freelancers, they are also entrepreneurs, business marketers, business managers, and programmers. Technology of today might have made it a lot easier but I think it’s a lot tougher being a Graphic Designer today compare to yesterday.

Before then only certain people who have actually mastered the craft were called a Graphic Designer. You have to be pretty skilled of what you do. You have to be an excellent stripper and/or inker. You really have to know what you’re doing or you can screw up a million dollar project. I know that it’s easier to achieve the job of being a Graphic Designer today. They have eliminated the nasty smell of a dark room. Everything is digital. And now you can actually print your own preview of a magazine in color without any problem. Printers are cheaper.
But still it takes a real skilled and talented designer to execute such designs in a competitive world. No matter how you slice this it takes creativity and discipline to meet the deadline. Computers are only a tool. WordPress is only a script. Adobe Creative Suite are just tools to use. It still takes a creative mind to produce something good.
So even if you are not a graphic designer, how do you feel about this? Do you think the new technology have work against us or for us? Please share with me your experience and your point-of-view about the new technology of today. How did it change your world?
