SPAM…SPAM…SPAM…I’m sure every single one of my friends have encountered spam. You know I used to like to eat Spam until one day I just had to stop eating it. Not only it is against my religion to eat pork, it is also very high in saturated animal fat and cholesterol. Bad for your heart. Plus, the chance of getting the trichinosis is not a pretty picture either. These are the worms that can grow up to 3 feet long and lives in your muscles. In order to remove these worms surgically, the doctor have to remove your muscles too!
But this is not about health, is it? I am not talking about the kind of spam you can eat but the kind of spam that is absolutely annoying and detrimental to your blog. That’s right. These spammers are like worms to me! They can ruin your blog and your position in Google search. And the reason why I encourage everyone to get their Gravatar, it is because this attracts spammers. And if you accept these spams your Google rating will not look very good either.
Here are some of the good example of the spammers. They don’t have a first name and last name. They don’t say anything. And if they say anything, it has nothing to do with your post. Some will shower you with compliments such as below. Listen to these…
“Oh, you must be a professional blogger!! Your website looks awesome!! As a newbie, what can can you suggest to improve my blog?”
“You have not establish your SEO and we cannot find you in Google search and in order for you to appear number one in Google search you have to do this…and that…” Their post can be like 3-page long! *rolls eyes*
Or they would come up with some bull like, “I have accidentally stumbled into your blog but glad I have. Now I am hooked. Your articles have helped me so much in overcoming my fear of blogging. Now I come to your blog everyday and shares it with my office mates!” *pulls the trigger* BAM!!!!!!!!!
Some came from “Empower Network.” I’ve heard that they were shut down by Facebook because so many abused the system. And they proclaimed the higher commission team. They look legit but it can be deceiving…that if they leave a message or link on my blog they will be all deleted and moved to the SPAM folder. I don’t support this website!
And if you hover your mouse on some of these spammers’ links it just shows that “W” logo which I believe stands for WordPress. It contains nothing but the logo.
Spammers don’t have gravatars or they are faceless commentators. Again, that’s the reason why I encourage you to get your gravatar if you are a newbie…yes specially a newbie! Because you don’t want to be in the category of a spammer, even though you are not. You don’t want to take that chances. It’s bad for your blog and your reputation as a professional blogger.
Your network relationship is the heart of your blog. You establish trust. You establish repertoire. You want repeat visitors. But if you have too many faceless commentators, your Google rank can go downhill. In fact your website can be black listed by Google because some contains malware! And you can be in big trouble!
Some spammers have their own gravatar and some became very, very smart. Their blog looks legit. But if you examine it closely what you see is not what you get.
Here’s what you need to be aware of:
- spammers reduces the trust from the real advertisers
- spammers creates a mess in your blog
- spammers discourages other real bloggers to comment on your blog
- spammers brings your blog down
- spammers gives you bad reputation
So how do you avoid these spammers? Good question. The answer is either Akismet plugin. Or CommentLuv plugin with its GASP plugin addition.
GASP stands for GrowMap Anti-Spambot Plug-in. It’s that little statement down below that says “Confirm you are NOT a spammer.”
Besides CommentLuv, I’ve have used Akismet too. In fact, I’ve had Akismet before CommentLuv. However, I have to warn you I heard that some people don’t like Akismet because some of the comments never made it to the owner’s blog. Akismet has a way of making your comments disappear before your friends can read your stuff. But it never really gave me a problem. So take your chance. Both Akismet and CommentLuv plugins are FREE.
So have you ever been spammed? And what did you do to solve this problem? Is there anything I am missing that you know that I don’t know? Will you share me your experience?
